Stan Waddell is a distinguished technology executive and board leader with over three decades of experience advancing digital transformation, cybersecurity, enterprise IT strategy, and organizational governance across higher education, healthcare, and public service. Recognized for his strategic vision, disciplined leadership, and ability to navigate technological disruption, Stan advises boards and institutional leadership on enterprise risk, data strategy, and innovation.
As Vice President for Information Technology and CIO at Carnegie Mellon University, Stan oversees a $60 million IT portfolio and leads CMU's technology enterprise in support of its global research and educational mission. He has led transformative initiatives in generative AI, cloud computing, data governance, cybersecurity, and operational excellence. His leadership includes the launch of CMU’s IT Strategic plan, Google Public Cloud GPU partnership, the university-wide 'Triple I' GenAI strategy, and the AI & Data Day conference. Stan played a key leadership role in guiding CMU’s operational response during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to CMU, Stan held senior leadership roles at the University of New Hampshire, UNC Chapel Hill, and UT Southwestern Medical Center. Across these roles, he delivered enterprise-wide IT governance, modernization, financial stewardship, and complex cybersecurity programs. Stan’s earlier career includes nearly a decade of service in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician, where he developed his foundation in technical discipline and operational leadership.
An active board contributor, Stan served as a Board Member of the Northeast Regional Computing Program (NERCOMP), Vice President of METAMESH Community Internet Solutions, and was previously appointed by the Governor of New Hampshire to the state IT Council. He mentors emerging leaders through the Next Leaders Fellowship, serves as an adjunct faculty in CMU’s Heinz CIO Executive Program, and frequently presents at EDUCAUSE, NERCOMP, and other national forums.
Stan earned his PhD in Information Systems (Information Assurance) from Nova Southeastern University, MS in Management and Administrative Sciences from University of Texas at Dallas, BS in Electrical Engineering from Old Dominion University, and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. He has held certifications that include CISSP, PMP, CEH, CHFI, ITIL, and CCISO. He is a Pittsburgh CIO of the Year awardee and Leadership Pittsburgh graduate.
