Barney started his career as a data engineer, driven by a passion for building scalable, high-impact data solutions within the financial services industry. Over nearly two decades, he progressively expanded his expertise and leadership across multiple global markets, working and living in 10+ countries, and gaining deep experience with both GSIB and DSIB organizations.His journey led him through increasingly senior roles encompassing digital banking platforms, data governance, data modernization, and cloud transformations—always with a focus on innovation and operational excellence. Barney developed and led enterprise-wide initiatives to design customer data marts, build advanced insights platforms, and establish robust data governance frameworks that support critical finance, risk, and compliance functions.Currently, Barney serves as Group Head of Data Architecture and Engineering at UniCredit, Milan. Additionally, he serves as the Chief Data Officer for UniCredito Italy's perimeter. In this pivotal role, he oversees group-wide data architecture, driving the strategic design, governance, Italian regulatory ownership/oversight, and operational management of scalable data platforms across UniCredit’s major European markets. He also owns the data engineering mandate, setting standards and frameworks that power the bank’s data pipelines and analytic capabilities.As a key leader in UniCredit’s digital transformation journey, Barney leads the data-related dimensions of the bank’s strategic partnership with Google Cloud—leveraging cloud, AI, and data analytics to accelerate innovation, enhance platform scalability, and deliver next-generation financial services.Known for his curiosity, passion, and collaborative approach, Barney thrives at the intersection of business and technology, engaging senior executives, technologists, and product teams to unlock value from data and drive organizational growth.
